George Trundle Masters Rd 3
Today our house scored 3/3! Our host Bruce Watson won an incredible game against Athula Russell, who is our fourth foreigner although he lives in New Zealand now. I was certain that he was busted but Bruce’s mate Fritz disagrees with me.Steven {Solomon} got off the mark at last as well with what looked like an easy win against the tal [...]
George Trundle Masters Rd 2
Today I played my host, Bruce Watson. We have played before and that too was a scrappy game. Last time, in the 2000 zonal, while trying to convert, I blundered with 84.Kg6?? allowing mate in one. Instead Bruce played 84…Qc5?? allowing 85.Qd8 mate!
Today neither of us blundered quite so badly. Bruce sacrificed the exchange for a pawn [...]
George Trundle Masters
It has been a few years since I have been to Aotearoa, aka New Zealand, and I have missed it. The country is the most beautiful one on planet earth, or at least the most beautiful I have seen. The chess scene is vibrant and friendly despite it’s distance from the rest of the world. One of the reasons for its success is the Auckland ches [...]
Happy 50th birthday Steven Solomon
Last weekend Anthony, Steven’s son, organised an open tournament in honour of his dads birthday. Since mine fell on the weekend, I was included as well. Thanks Anthony. And thanks for wearing your Doubleroo t-shirt at the prizegiving.

Steven duly won the tournament with a picket fence score. His fifth round win a [...]
Brodie McClymont wins Peninsula open.
Brodie won with a picket fence 7/7. He was in trouble in round 5 against Yi Liu but apart from that his tournament looked like plain sailing. I was second on 6/7 and Tony Weller finished in clear third! A sensational result for Tony in a strong field. The other prizes were mainly taken by the juniors. I’ll publish those results when I f [...]
Peninsula Open, rounds 4+5
First up in the morning I had to play Brodie with black. 18…f5 was based on a miscalculation which obliged me to sack a pawn. I got some counterplay only to miscalculate the ending. Shows I need a warm up before Malaysia.
So feeling quite dejected after the morning debacle, I played this game quite aimlessly until my opponent made an [...]
Peninsula Open 2013
After some radio silence expect a flurry of posts. I am escaping the winter for some chess in Malaysia and France. But before leaving why not warm up a bit? The Peninsula Open offered the perfect opportunity.Since I was a teenager I regularly wrote “Solomon” on my scoresheet. Today, for the first time, the initial was different. [...]

Winners are grinners! Moulthun played the best chess this weekend and was a deserved winner. To me he never looked to be in any trouble. I tied for second with Yi Lui and Bruce Williams.
