First, our sign is up again, tournament hall is ready, demo boards are hung up and we are ready for business! Now to this weekends chess!
The Somerville house senior team faces the Brisbane Grammar team in the high schools competition.
Saturday training squad at the academy. These girls are very keen and even in a week filled with chess they still wanted to train on Saturday. Michael Vohla played to even the numbers and Jane Nimmo got to play him as a “reward” for showing the best concentration recently.
The “A” team played in the open division against the best junior teams Brisbane has to offer. Abbey Anstey-Walsh had to hold up first board against older and more experienced boys. Typical of her fighting spirit her game was the last to finish on Sunday. Jane Nimmo on board two was showing great concentration as usual and did very well. On board three was Sophie Watkins who has nearly forgotten how to lose. She gave away a draw on Friday and lost one game on Sunday. Anastasia Kondos on board four must have felt a bit rusty after not playing competitive chess for so long but she still won nearly every game.
Brigitte Watkins, not even ten years old, led the Somerville intermediary team to victory in her section. On board two was Penny Mina who has also taken a long break from competitive chess. Elizabeth {Lizzy} Drennan’s pieces kept swarming around her opponents kings and on board four Jana Chehade’s brutal openings won one game after the other. They needed to win 3-1 to clinch first place and with the pressure on these girls did it! Congratulations!
All the results can be seen on the southside junior chess club site http://www.southsidejuniorchessclub.org/Somerville%20House%20Invitationals.htm
And on Thursday the Circus moves to Stretton. See you there.
Have a nice day
Alex
