Develop your talent
Australia has many talented chess players but very few reach their full potential. There are many reasons for this. Chess is not recognised as a sport in Australia. In most countries it is. Our geographical location also makes it difficult to host international events. So for strong youngsters your best option is to go overseas, which brings me to my next recommendation.
Vizag, India.
A few days ago I received an invitation to play in India. I have been to India many times and have always found the tournaments to be very strong, well organised and cheap. All players are accommodated and stronger players (IM’s and above) receive good incentives to play. The next good tournament starts on the 25th of October. Details here. For other tournaments in India, and there are many, go to the all India Chess federation calendar.
Caloundra, Sunshine coast.
For talented juniors who are just starting to play competitive chess in inter-schools competitions and are interested enough to study the game and/or receive some coaching, the best way in my opinion to make quick progress is to play some adult weekend tournaments, especially in places where parents can have a nice time. Just such a tournament is taking place in Caloundra on the 24th and 25th of November. Go to the clubs website calendar for further details.
Have a nice day
Alex.
